Reporting Video
By Kate Carter, Zoe Haggard, and Devin Jackson
MTSU's Opera Theater performed the comedic operetta Iolanthe March 22nd-23rd at Hinton Hall.
Most people are familiar with musical whether it be Hamilton, Wicked, or Les Mis. However, what most people are unfamiliar with is that the musical theater we known today began hundreds of years ago in the form of opera. Iolanthe is considered one of the first musical-type performances from the 19th century, written by the famed pair Gilbert & Sullivan. It's about a fairy named Iolanthe who was banished from the fairy world for marrying a human. Consequently, her half-human son, whose upper body is immortal, is doomed to live forever while his legs must...well, die. Full of humor and subtle satire, the operetta is an enjoyable performance ideal to introduce opera into college arts.
